Volkswagen California – Ocean vs Beach Review

There are two key versions to choose – the Beach and the range-topping Ocean. But how do you choose between them? Let’s take a look.

The California is the real star of the show!

Volkswagen dominates the compact camper van market, and it’s the California that’s the real show star.

Attracting a particularly loyal following, it’s ideal for those wanting a camper that they could use on a day in-day out basis. There are two key versions to choose – the Beach and the range-topping Ocean. But how do you choose between them? Let’s take a look.

California Beach

If you’re not as fussed about having all the luxuries in the world, but want to live your best Volkswagen California dreams, this is the model to go for.

Think of the Beach as more of a converted MPV that can double-up as a camper. They get five seats as standard, with the option to increase this to six or seven, yet are still very well furnished, including elements like a manual pop-up roof, an awning with a housing and rail in black, as well as a mini kitchen that folds out from a single side panel, but can be easily tucked away when not in use.

So the Beach is ultimately a sleeper van – yet still coming equipped with all the necessities for a weekend away. There are currently a variety of Used Volkswagen California Beach campers available across our VWCV dealerships!

Engine choice

Volkswagen offers a choice of two diesel engines on the California. All are paired to a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox too. The starting option is a turbocharged 2.0-litre TDI unit that develops 148bhp, and is available across both trim levels – returning a claimed fuel economy figure of 35.3mpg.

At the top of the range is a 2.0-litre TDI engine that takes the power figure up to a healthy 201bhp, bringing extra performance, but not really at the expense of fuel efficiency. This more powerful engine is unique to the Ocean.

Optional extras

When it comes to specifying your California, Volkswagen offers a choice of nine paint colours, including solid, metallic and pearl finishes, while a two-tone paint finish can also be ordered,

A variety of 17- or 18-inch alloy wheel designs are also available, while you can specify a Sport or Style package to add extra flair to the California’s styling too, as well as a chrome package as well. More practical options include swivelling seats, an extended bed and increased alternator capacity if you’re looking to use more powerful electrical equipment.

California Ocean

However, if you want your VW to be like a fully-fitted motorhome, it’s the Ocean model that you should choose. It brings a significant uplift in price, but truly gets everything you could possibly want from a small motorhome.

It’s a more glamorous affair with the Ocean, as that pop-up roof opens electronically (rather than manually like in the Beach). There’s an onboard fridge to keep your food and drinks cold, as well as a built-in hob that you can prepare meals with.

There’s no seven-seat option with the Ocean, too, because of the space taken up by the kitchen, while the cabin bed (rather than the one in the pop-up roof) is slightly narrower.

Ocean models also come with a suite of additional equipment, including front and rear parking sensors with park assist, as well as an insulated privacy glass. Whilst there is the option of ordering a brand-new example, there are currently lots of examples of Used Volkswagen California Ocean campers available across at VWCV dealerships!
